Rome considers tourist corridor at Trevi Fountain

Rome mayor proposes non-stop passageway for tourists at Trevi Fountain.

Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi has proposed channeling tourists through a "non-stop passageway" at the capital's Trevi Fountain, effectively stopping visitors from congregating around the 18th-century monument.

Raggi's proposal follows numerous recent cases of individuals – both Italian and foreign – jumping into the waters of the Baroque fountain, in some cases without their clothes.

During the monument's €2 million restoration, sponsored by fashion house Fendi, a temporary tourist bridge was installed over the fountain's basin in 2014.

Italian culture minister Dario Franceschini recently suggested controlling the numbers of tourists at Italy's heavily-crowded sites such as the Trevi Fountain and St Mark's Square in Venice.
