Major traffic problems expected in Rome on 24 May.
Rome security chiefs have four route options available for each journey being taken in the city by the US president Donald Trump who lands in Fiumicino airport at 18.30 on Tuesday 23 May.
Each of the president's routes will be chosen by security officers at the last minute, leading to certain commuter problems in the city centre during Wednesday 24 May.
Trump will travel around Rome in the eight-ton armoured Cadillac known as "The Beast" as part of a 50-car motorcade. The presidential entourage will include the First Lady Melania Trump, the president's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner.
The president begins 24 May with an 08.30 visit to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis, followed by a tour of the Vatican Museums. At 11.30 Trump will be welcomed by the Italian president Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale followed by a 12.30 meeting with Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni at Villa Taverna.
The First Lady and Ivanka are scheduled to visit the Vatican-run paediatric hospital Bambino Gesù on the Gianicolo hill at 11.00, followed 25 minutes later by a visit to the S. Egidio community in Trastevere.
Ivanka and Kushner will then visit Palazzo Chigi at 15.15 and will remain in Rome on the night of 25 May, after the departure of the presidential delegation for Brussels. The couple are expected to have dinner in a Roman restaurant, rumoured to be Antica Pesa, a celebrity haunt in Trastevere, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
