Ann Hamilton : Phora
18 Feb-22 May 2005.
Phora is Ann Hamiltons first solo show in Paris and amounts to what has been described as an utterance and a vocal expression inspired by the history and architecture of the famous Maison Rouge (Red House) and two important and symbolic locations in the Parisian landscape, namely the Bastille as the expression of public will, and the Bastille Opera as a demonstration of the publics voice. The different exhibition spaces have been transformed into laboratories exploring the genesis of vocalization and vocal expression. As visitors enter they are surrounded by mouths and vocal chords the source of the speech. Taken from video and reproduced on paper the images will eventually cover the walls of the Maison Rouge and its adjoining terrace. Tickets cost 6.50 or 4.50 with concessions.
