Most cinema theatres close down for the summer yielding to the the increasingly popular attraction of open air cinema arenas which have sprung up in almost every quartiere, both central and suburban. So keep an eye on the daily press for films of every genre in parks, gardens, squares and archaeological sites.

LIsola del Cinema. 1 June-3 September 2006. The Isola Tiberina on the river Tiber hosts this multifaceted festival every evening from 18.00. Amongst the stalls and exhibitions, it features an open-air giant screen and a smaller one, in an enclosed space in which monographic cycles and encounters with protagonists of the film world are organised. The programme includes a section dedicated to shorts entitled Urban Islands Short Film Competition.
