Rome bids farewell to last Auschwitz survivor

Roman Enrica Zarfati was deported to Auschwitz in 1944.

Enrica Zarfati, Rome's last Jewish survivor of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, has died in the capital, aged 95.

Born in 1921, Zarfati grew up in Garbatella district and was deported to Auschwitz in 1944, just before the Liberation of Rome from German occupation and fascist rule, after being denounced to the Nazis by a fascist spy.

The city's Jewish community has paid tribute to Zarfati, describing her as a "courageous witness and determined fighter against all forms of Holocaust denial."

Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi said that Zarfati "dedicated her life to telling the story of Auschwitz and, despite the atrocities experienced there, she has left a legacy full of virtue and hope.”
