A city without cars.
On Sunday 6 March all private traffic, including motorcycles, will be banned from the "green zone" in Rome from 10.00 until 18.00. (see page 114 of the Tutto Citt city guide distributed with the telephone directories for a map of the green zone). Anyone caught driving in this fascia verde will be fined 71.
This will be the third traffic free Sunday of the year and the city has made special arrangements for residents and tourists to enjoy the pedestrian city as much as possible.
The Capitoline Museums will be open free all day and there will be free guided tours of the Teatro dell Opera from 11.00 14.30. If the Tiber is not flooded there will be free boat rides on the river. In Via dei Fori Imperiali mini-basket and mini volley-ball competitions will be organised from 10.00 13.00. The Legambiente, the organisation that promotes awareness of the environment, will be teaching children how to use energy with care and there will be a presentation of the car-sharing service now being promoted by the city. Acea, the municipal electrical utility, will also provide information about vehicle exhaust emissions and tests for domestic heating boilers.
In Piazza del Popolo there will be mini football, table tennis and an obstacle race from 10.00-13.00. In Testaccio there will be guided walks starting at the ex- Mattatoio in Piazza Giustiniani at 10.00 and 13.00. The Casa del Cinema in the Villa Borghese will be open from 15.00 -19.00 with an exhibition of works by Ettore Scola.
