Abandoned babies project.
The Policlinico Casilino in the eastern suburbs of Rome has started up a new service in answer to the increasing number of newborn babies abandoned in the city each year. The number of babies born outside hospitals and then abandoned in 2005 was 84 (up from 53 in 2004), and the Policlinico is often the place chosen by desperate parents to leave unwanted newborns. Between 2004 and 2005, 17 babies were abandoned at the hospital, but many are less fortunate and are left in places where they may never be found. The new initiative,
