When mining magnate and philanthropist Solomon R. Guggenheim established a foundation in 1937 to foster an appreciation of modern art, a global art empire was born. In 1943, Guggenheim commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a museum on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
