Numbers don't stack up for Raggi administration.
The 2017-2019 budget prepared by the administration of Rome mayor Virginia Raggi has been rejected by the city's independent auditing body, the Organo di Revisione Economico-Finanziaria (OREF).
The auditors said the budget did not estimate correctly the capital's projected revenue and expenditure, the fundamentals of any budget, and failed to follow the recommendations of Italy's finance ministry.
This is the first time that OREF has rejected a Rome budget, which was the debut attempt by Raggi's anti-establishment Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S), and was drawn up by the city's budget councillor Andrea Mazzillo.
The rebuttal by OREF is the latest headache faced by the embattled mayor whose administration has been hit by a string of scandals in recent days.
