Bonus points for careful motorists.
From the 1 July 2005, holders of Italian driving licences who have not had any points removed since the penalty system was introduced in 2003 will receive a bonus of two points.
All Italian driving-licence holders have 20 virtual points, which can be removed when the holder commits a series of driving or parking offence. Drivers losing all 20 have to resit a test within 30 days of receiving notification from the department of transport, or they will forfeit the licence. Anyone losing a few points can regain them by doing a special course at a driving school. However, lost points are automatically re-credited to the licence two years after the last offence.
