Trump's ambassador to Vatican begins new role day after attending funeral of Cardinal Law.
The new US ambassador to the Holy See Callista Gingrich presented her credentials to Pope Francis on 22 December, marking the official start of her new role as the liason between Washington and the Holy See.
Ambassador Gingrich, who was nominated by President Trump to serve as the 11th US ambassador to the Vatican, follows her predecessor
Kenneth F. Hackett who served during Barack Obama’s second term as president.
The
new ambassador is joined in Rome by her high-profile husband Newt Gingrich, the former US House Speaker and Trump ally, whom she married in 2000 following a six-year affair.
As ambassador-designate, Gingrich has already attended several recent functions in Rome, including the funeral of disgraced American cardinal
Bernard Law at St Peter's on 21 December.
