Car-free Sunday.
The European car-free day will be held on 22 September, but in Rome it will be marked on 25 September when the city has programmed an ecological Sunday. From 10.00-18.00 on Sunday, all private traffic will be banned from the areas of the city that are normally only open to limited traffic (the ZTL). For full information on the areas that will be closed see www.comune.roma.it.
On 22 September some pedestrian precincts in Rome may be extended for part of the day, but the failure to mark the occasion with the rest of Europe has been criticised by the local head of the World Wildlife Foundation on the grounds that the authorities have wasted an opportunity to test the capacity of the public transport system.
