Cemetery surveillance.
Closed circuit television cameras are to be installed at Romes Verano and Prima Porta cemeteries following a series of thefts of monumental statuary. In the past few day thieves have attempted to steal two stone lions from a tomb at the Verano cemetery, resting place of many famous Italians. Using a jack, the thieves first lifted a sarcophagus weighing almost three tons before removing the stone animals. Having dismantled the tomb the robbers were unable to get the massive pieces out of the cemetery and they have been recovered and will be replaced.
The new director of the city cemetery service, Vittoria Benedetto Borghini, believes that the cemetery thefts are being committed by experts who act on commission.
