With the opening-up of the telephone information service to competition, the number 12, which was once the only service available, has been replaced with a series of numbers offered by the various telephone networks, both Italian and foreign, such as 1254 (Telecom Italia), 1255 (Wind), 1260 (Pagine Italia), 1289 (SEAT Pagine Gialle), 1290 (Omnitel/Vodafone) and a further nine such numbers. There are more than 200 million calls every year for information, so competition to exploit this profitable market is intense. However CODACONs, an Italian consumer confederation, has protested that the price charged by these new companies is in some cases more than double the charge of the old 12 service.
