From 25 October, Rome residents will receive a discount when buying ecological motorcycles and electric cars. The Lazio regional government has set aside 4 million in subsidies for 2005. To receive the discount, anyone buying a conventionally-fuelled non-electric motorcycle must turn in an old motorcycle to be destroyed, complete with documentation of ownership and proof of a current insurance policy.

The discount on electrically-powered vehicles will be 30 per cent of the full price, or up to a maximum of300 for an electric bicycle, 800 for an electric motorcycle and 1,300 for an electric car. The discounts for ecological, petrol-fuelled motorcycles will be from 50 for the lowest powered 50cc motorcycles up to 350 for a 200cc motorcycle. It is hoped that up to 14,000 motorcycles will be destroyed during this new campaign.
