Disruption continues at Rome's Fiumicino airport

Passengers should check with airline for up-to-date arrangements.

Passengers flying through Rome's main international airport at Fiumicino (FCO) are being advised to check flight details with their airlines before going to the airport, due to ongoing disruption caused by the fire in Terminal 3 on 7 May.

The fire-damaged terminal, which is used for international flights, has been operating at 60 per cent capacity since 13 June, leading to many flights being cancelled, postponed, or diverted to the city's much smaller airport Ciampino.

To cope with the extra demand, FCO has opened up additional check-in areas, further away from the main building in places such as Terminal 5, however passengers are complaining of ad-hoc and poorly sign-posted services.

There are reports of flights being postponed for a day or cancelled without warning from the airline, of people arriving at FCO and being told their flight is leaving from Ciampino, of passengers waiting hours to check-in or to claim their baggage after landing.

The company that manages the airport, Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) says that its staff is providing information to travellers, including those arriving by train, but it is appealing to passengers to clarify their travel information before leaving for the airport.

ADR also says that a free shuttle bus service is available to ferry passengers from Terminal 2 at FCO across the city to Ciampino, on the hour, from 06.00 fo 21.00. However in recent days the management company has been battling a flurry of complaints on its Facebook page, from irate or worried passengers whose travel plans have been adversely affected.

The order to reduce operating capacity in Terminal 3 was taken over safety fears for the infrastructure of the terminal's damaged by the fire. The blaze gutted the structure's crucial intersection in the departure areas between gates G and H, which is also the through-way for passengers on connecting international flights between Terminal 3 and Terminal 2.
