St Peter's turns off lights for Earth Hour The annual "Earth Hour" event takes place in Rome on Saturday 29 March at 20.30.
Backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) the global initiative involves famous buildings around the world turning off their lights for one hour in support of climate change action.
This year the central focus in Rome will be on the dome and façade of St Peter's Basilica whose lights will be switched off at 20.30.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 and by last year saw the participation of over 2 billion people in 7,000 cities and 154 countries worldwide. For more details see WWF website.
