Over 13,000 runners cross finish line despite heavy rain.
The winner of the 2017 Rome marathon on 2 April was Ethiopian athlete Tola Shura Kitata, whose time of 2:07:27 was the second-fastest recorded in the event's 23-year history. Tola finished almost two minutes ahead of Kenya's Dominic Ruto and Benjamin Bitok, in second and third place respectively.
First place in the women's group went to Ethiopian athlete Chota Rahma Tusa, who retained her title from last year, with a time of 2:27:23.
Chota was followed in second and third place by two other Ethiopian runners: Mestawot Tadesse and Abeba Tekulu Gebremeskel.
Despite torrential rain for much of the day a total of 13,312 runners, including 31 disabled athletes, completed the 42-km marathon around the streets of Rome. 10,514 men and 2,798 women crossed the finish line on Via del Fori Imperiali, of whom 7,399 were Italian and 5,913 foreign.
Last year 13,831 completed the marathon, the next edition of which is scheduled for 8 April 2018.
