Social media accounts of CasaPound and Forza Nuova shut down.
The official Facebook and Instagram accounts of two Italian far-right groups - Casapound and Forza Nuova - were shut down on 9 September for violating the platforms' policies against spreading hate, according to Facebook which owns Instagram.
The Facebook and Instagram accounts of many national and local activists belonging to both far-right groups, including elected representatives, were also blocked, however the groups' Twitter accounts remain active.
"People and organizations that spread hatred or attack others based on who they are, have no place on Facebook and Instagram," Facebook said in a statement.
The move was condemned by Gianluca Iannone, president of the Rome-based CasaPound, who told Italian news agency ANSA that is was "an unprecedented attack" and that the group would be filing an "urgent class action law suit against an act of disgraceful prevarication."
