Factory explosion near Rome.
An explosion in a conventional arms plant 55 km from Rome in the town of Colleferro has left 1 worker dead and 13 wounded. The explosion occurred the morning of 9 October as workers were returning from their breakfast break. It is still unclear whether human error or faulty equipment were the cause of the accident.
The factory is operated by Simmel Difesa Spa,, bought by British arms manufacturer Chemring Group Plc in March 2007. It employs a total of 220 workers, 25 of which were in the branch affected by the explosion. Pacifist organizations have long criticized the plant for the production of cluster bombs, though Simmel continues to deny producing them.
