The first scholarship in memory of the murdered English student Meredith Kercher is to be officially announced in Perugia on Tuesday 4 June in a ceremony with the city’s mayor, Meredith’s sister Stephanie, and the head of Perugia’s University for Foreigners.
The winner of the first scholarship is Olivia Taylor.
The award is for a British student to study Italian and Italian culture for two months at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia.
The scholarship fund has been set up in memory of Meredith who was studying at the university at the time of her murder in 2007.
Her flatmate Amanda Knox and Knox’s ex-boy Raffaele Sollecito were tried and found guilty in 2009 of her murder but acquitted on appeal two years later. The acquittal verdict has subsequently been overturned and there will now be a retrial.
