First restored MAXXI space opens
The first exhibition space has opened at the Museo delle Arti del XXI Secolo, or MAXXI as it is called, in the Flaminio area of Rome. Ravenna-born Margherita Manzelli is showing work depicting emaciated young women, and there is a 110-metre mural entitled "The Emancipation Approximation" by Californian artist Kara Walker (3 Dec-8 Feb 2004). The two-storey building where the show is will eventually house a bookshop, study centre and restaurant. The museum complex has been designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, and construction, which began last March, is scheduled for completion in 2006. There is also a multimedia exhibition called "Mobilitaly" illustrating the results of research into architecture and mobility. MAXXI, Via G. Reni 6, tel. 063202438. 11.00-19.00. Mon closed.
