Floating platform detonated at Ponte S. Angelo.
On Sunday 14 Dec at around 15.00, a pair of small explosives were used to detonate a floating platform, which had been dragged by floodwaters into the Ponte S. Angelo together with a river boat and other detritus on Friday evening 12 December. The debris has been placing considerable strain on the old bridge by blocking the flow of floodwater underneath. During the operation, police closed much of the Lungotevere causing traffic pileups throughout the historic centre.
As of Monday 15 December, the river boat was still pinned against the bridge. City engineers hope to remove it as soon as possible before the water level begins to rise again.
Following a brief respite over the weekend, rain and thunderstorms resumed early morning Monday 15 December and are expected to continue through Wednesday 18 December.
