Free admission to seven Rome museums

Increased ticket prices at ten other Rome museums

Seven of Rome's municipal museums are now free to visitors while ticket prices have been increased at another ten museums under city management.

The free museums are Villa di Massenzio, Museo delle Mura, Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, Museo Pietro Canonica, Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina, Museo Napoleonico and Museo Carlo Bilotti (in the final two there are currently temporary exhibitions which cost €1.50 to visit however there is no longer an entry fee for the permanent collections).

All the free museums are among the capital's less well known and less visited art institutions.

However the city has decided to increase the entry fee for ten more popular museums in its remit, raising the price by one or two euro depending on the museum. These include the Capitoline Museums, Ara Pacis, both MACRO museums (Testaccio and Via Nizza), Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale, Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi, Musei di Villa Torlonia (Casina delle Civette, Casino dei Principi, Casino Nobile), Centrale Montemartini and Trajan's Markets. The most expensive is the Capitoline Museums at €15 (full price) while the cheapest is Villa Torlonia at €6 (full price).

The city's culture councillor Giovanna Marinelli described the increases as "very limited" and said the move to make seven municipal museums free was designed to "push everyone, Romans and tourists, to discover the masterpieces" of the capital's "lesser known treasures."

The existing discounts for Rome residents still apply; to see updated entry fees see the Musei in Comune website.
