Free beer for cigarette butts on Rome beach
Lazio craft beer festival cleans up S. Severa beach near Rome.
A craft beer festival at the beachside Castle of S. Severa near Rome is offering a free beer for every full glass of cigarette butts or filters collected off the beach.
Taking place from 25-28 July, Fermento: Festival delle Birre Artigianali del Lazio is a four-day event designed to showcase craft beer produced in Lazio.
The clean-up campaign, titled "Help us make the beach cleaner", has the support of the Lazio Region and is described as only the second such initiative in Italy.
Festival organisers say it is an opportunity to raise awareness of an important environmental issue, underlining that cigarette butts left in nature take up to 12 years to decompose.
Cigarette butts are the world's biggest plastic pollutant and the single largest source of beach pollution.
