Annual Primo Maggio concert in S. Giovanni
On 1 May every year Italy dedicates a public holiday to its workers. In Rome buses and trams will run from 08.30 to 13.00 and from 16.30 to 21.00, with the routes of several night bus services diverted on the night between Friday 1 May and Saturday 2 May.
The city's metro lines will operate from 05.30 until 01.30, although the S. Giovanni and Manzoni stations on the A line normally close by 15.00, coinciding with Piazza S. Giovanni's traditional May Day concert organised annually by the main Italian trades unions.
The ten-hour concertone features well-known Italian acts such as Irene Grandi, Enrico Ruggieri, J-Ax, Goran Bregovic, Alpha Blondy, and Alex Britti. For full line-up see Primo Maggio website.
The area around Piazza S. Giovanni will be closed to traffic all day, leading to numerous bus detours on surrounding streets.
Traffic is also affected by the annual Primo Maggio Marathon which starts and ends at Via Carlo Felice, from 09.30-11.00, and attracts up to 500 athletes each year.
