Many an Italian graduate in English arrives in London only to be surrounded by deepest Cockney, prompting doubts as to whether they have arrived in the right country. Native English speakers, visiting some bar in Pigneto or Trastevere, might be excused of equivalent bewilderment as regards Romanesco, the local Roman dialect which shares with Cockney a way of dropping the final syllable.
