Death of Lello Di Segni comes 75 years after 1943 raid in Rome's Jewish Ghetto.
Lello Di Segni, the last survivor of the 1943 raid on Rome's Jewish Ghetto district to deport Jews to Nazi extermination camps, has died in Rome aged 92.
Di Segni's death comes nine days after the 75th anniversary of the raid which occurred at dawn on 16 October 1943 and resulted in the deportation to Auschwitz of 1,023 Roman Jews, including 200 children.
Ruth Dureghello, president of Rome's Jewish Community, said that "with the loss of Di Segni we have lost the historical memory of those who endured the raid of 16 October and then returned to tell us about it."
Di Segni was one of just 16 were to make it back to Rome alive.
