385 bandiera blu beaches in Italy in 2019.
Nine beaches in the Lazio region have been awarded the 2019 bandiera blu (blue flag) status for high water quality standards.
The number of Lazio beaches to receive the coveted award has increased to nine, up one from last year with the return of Anzio.
The other Lazio beaches to retain the blue flag from last year are Latina, Sabaudia, S. Felice Circeo, Terracina, Sperlonga, Gaeta and Ventotene, with the inclusion of Trevignano on Lake Bracciano.
The recognition comes from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which assigns the flags to beaches with "excellent" water quality.
The agency also takes into consideration the beach’s waste management, recycling, the extent of its pedestrian and bicycle paths and green areas, and the presence of lifeguards.
A total of 385 beaches across Italy were awarded blue flags this year, up from 368 last year and 215 a decade ago.
