Wed 8 Dec is the Italian public holiday for the religious feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is the day when the pope traditionally visits Piazza Mignanelli near Piazza di Spagna to pray at the foot of the monument to the Madonna, and to deliver a floral crown to be placed in the arms of the statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of the Roman column.
