Looking after pets.
For the first time for several years the number of dogs adopted from the city council dog pound in August exceeded the number of strays taken into care. A total of 168 dogs were found homes, while 157 abandoned animals were admitted to the pound. During August more than 1,799 people visited the pound at the Muratella and more than 3,700 people telephoned for information about adopting a dog, or for advice about taking their animals on holiday.
Cats were taken into care at the refuge for injured and sick animals at the Porta Portese animal shelter, and reptiles, rabbits and ducks wre being cared for at the Biopark. The Italian league for the protection of birds, LIPU, took in a total of 479 birds that needed medical care and half of these have already been released.
