Monument to Nassiriya victims will replace Axum obelisk
The victims of the 12 November bomb attack on the Italian base in Nassiriya, Iraq are to be remembered with a monument in Piazza di Porta Capena in front of the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization. The square's name will be changed to Largo Caduti di Nassiriya in honour of the 19 Italian soldiers and civilians who were killed in the blast. The city council has set aside 250,000 for the construction of the memorial, which will replace the Axum obelisk currently being dismantled before being returned to Ethiopia, its country of origin. The "Roma Capitale" commission will fund an international competition for the monument's design.
