New honorary citizen.
The president of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, was presented with honorary citizenship of Rome by the citys mayor Walter Veltroni at a ceremony on the Capitoline Hill on 27 September.
The president, who comes from Livorno, joins an illustrious group of honorary citizens, including Alessandro Manzoni, Giuseppe Verdi, Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II and Aung San Suu Ky. Following the ceremony, President Ciampi and his wife Franca where shown around the Rome council telephone call centre 060606 and the new Casa del Jazz.
