New sports centres for city suburbs.
Five new sports complexes will be built in the suburbs of Rome by the beginning of 2009, city mayor Walter Veltroni has announced. Work on complexes in the zones of Cesano, Pietralata, Bufalotta, Casal d Pazzi and Collidoni is due to begin in summer next year. Each will cover two hectares, seat around 1,200-1,500 spectators and have facilities for playing basketball, volleyball and other sports as well as swimming pools. The complexes in Cesano and Pietralata will cost 6.6 million in total and will be paid for by city authorities because they are in territory marked out by city planners as future sites of university campus extensions earlier this year. The three remaining complexes will be built using private funds.
