New wing for multicultural market
The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino (the market formerly located in Piazza Vittorio) is set to become even bigger. The second wing of the former barracks on Via Filippo Turati, which now houses the market, is scheduled to be inaugurated at the beginning of February, and will contain 54 clothing and homeware stalls laid out around a fountain dating back to the 3rd century AD. The fountain, which was unearthed during the renovation works, will be protected by a crystal pyramid and illuminated. It will be visible both from the ground-floor market area and from the floor below, where an 80-place car park has been built. The structure will be air-conditioned and include a large caf. The food and produce market moved to its present location in another wing of the barracks in 2001.
