No more illegal sellers?
In 2006 there will be no excuse for people to buy goods from illegal street sellers. All sellers, or ambulante as they are known, will have to display a clear permit that they have a licence to do business. In this way, legal sellers will be easily recognisable.
In January a "concorso" , or competition, will be announced for a design for a model stand from which the street sellers can sell their goods. The mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, believes that this will rejuvenate their image, give them a higher profile and unify the look of the sellers, as well as making it easier for the public to steer away from illegal stands. At present many invade the streets of Rome without the necessary authorisation.
