No more mercury thermometers.
From 2 April only digital thermometers are available for sale in Italy. Thermometers containing mercury have now been banned, in line with a 2006 European Union directive to reduce the use and spread of the highly toxic substance in the environment.
Anyone who still owns one of the old-fashioned and potentially dangerous items may still use it but must eventually dispose of it at one of two special AMS sites in Rome: Campo Boario (Piramide) tel. 065741203) or Via dei Campi Sportivi 100 (Acqua Acetosa) tel. 068076120.
