Opera notes
Teatro San Carlo in Naples opens its new season with Don Giovanni by Mozart (12-29 Dec). Neapolitan film director Mario Martone obviously has a weak spot for Mozart: having made his dbut with Cosi fan tutte in Naples three years ago he now tackles Don Giovanni, a difficult opera but one against which directors want to measure themselves sooner or later. The part of the protagonist is played by Ildebrando dArcangelo, a young bass who is able to switch from comic to dramatic roles with ease. Mariella Devia, Anna Caterina Antonacci and Elisabeth Norberg-Schulz again perform together in this opera after their success in Rome last June. Gabriele Ferro, the permanent conductor at Teatro San Carlo, will conduct.
