Oscar for Italy's Ennio Morricone

Italian composer wins first competitive Oscar.

Italian composer Ennio Morricone won an Oscar for best original score for his soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's movie The Hateful Eight at the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 28 February. At the ceremony he dedicated his award to his wife, Maria who was in LA with him.

Although it was Morricone's sixth Oscar nomination, it was the first time the 87-year-old won a "competitive" Oscar, having receiving an Honorary Academy Award in 2007 for his contribution to film music.

Earlier this year, on 30 January, the celebrated composer received a Golden Globe award in Rome for The Hateful Eight soundtrack. It was the first time the accolade – Morricone’s third for best original score – was bestowed outside Los Angeles.

His two other Golden Globe awards were for the soundtrack to The Mission by Roland Joffe, in 1987, and again in 2000 for the soundtrack to The Legend of 1900 by Giuseppe Tornatore.
