Piazza S. Cosimato inaugurated
Piazza S. Cosimatos 3 million facelift has been unveiled after 18 months of restoration and building work. The 10,000 sqm piazza in Trastevere is now semi-pedestrianised (with access to vehicles only at entrances and exits along Via Roma Libera) with a new structure for its market, spaces for children to play, benches, a fountain and improved street lighting. Romes mayor Walter Veltroni said the overhaul had transformed the piazza from one of Romes markets into one of the citys drawing-rooms, according to Il Messaggero. The market, which moved to Piazza Mastai while work took place, will return to its previous position but the number of fixed stalls has been reduced to form an architectural whole. The movable stalls will be placed at the centre of the piazza and will be stored within the fixed stall structure when the market closes. As part of the work, the mediaeval protiro of the convent of SS. Cosma e Damiano which had been obstructed by rubbish and fenced off has now been restored and forms a boundary for the childrens play area.
