Unregistered drivers targeted tourists.

Police have impounded 38 illegal taxis and arrested their drivers at Rome's central Termini station in recent months.

The arrests – part of ongoing efforts by Italy's interior ministry to combat illegal activity at Stazione Termini – began after an investigation into one suspicious taxi led police to uncover an entire network operating out of the station.

The unregistered taxi drivers had been specifically targeting tourists, charging three times the regular fare. Several of the cars were not insured and in some cases the taxi drivers did not even have a driving licence.

In the first six months of this year police arrested some 200 people in the area around the station for theft and pick-pocketing.
