Bishop of Rome expresses concern for capital.
Rome has become "a city of decay and neglect" according to Pope Francis who was speaking during a Mass for Corpus Christi in the Tiburtina district on 23 June. The pontiff applealed for action and generosity in a city “hungry for love and care, in front of so many lonely elderly people, families in difficulty, young people who are struggling to earn bread and nurture dreams.”
It is not the first time that the Bishop of Rome has expressed his concern for the city. During a visit to city hall in March, Pope Francis called on city councillors to seek to bring about the "moral and spiritual rebirth" of the capital.
Francis warned: "Rome is a delicate organism, which needs humble, constant care and creative courage to keep it tidy and liveable, so that all this splendour does not decline."
