Primaries on the left.
Romano Prodi, leader of the left-wing political alliance LUnione, has announced that primary elections will be held on 8-9 October 2005 to choose a leader for the alliance. Only four people are so far standing as candidates for the leadership; they are Prodi himself, Fausto Bertinotti, leader of Rifondazione Comunista, Antonio Pecoraro Scanio, president of the Green party, and Antonio Di Pietro, leader of the Italia dei Valori party. The political parties of the left taking part in these elections, even if they do not have a candidate from their own party, will commit themselves to recognising the winner as leader of LUnione for five years. A commission is to be set up to decide who will have the right to vote (probably registered members of the political parties involved), and where and how the voting will take place.
