Public sector strike.
All Italian public sector workers are to strike all day on 30 Nov. Government offices, schools, banks, post offices and airports are expected to close and demonstrations are planned in 70 different towns and cities all over the country. The three leading Italian trades union organisations CGIL, CISL and UIL, are united in their discontent about the pay and conditions being offered to workers in the public sector during financial manoeuvrings by the government. In the latest attempt to find financing for income tax reductions, pay cuts are threatened on new contracts to public sector workers as well as general spending cuts in all ministries and a reduction in funding to the south of Italy, where unemployment is a major problem.
