Rice Bowl 2006.
The annual Lenten Rice Bowl collection organised by English-speaking churches in the city is in aid of the European Womens Solidarity Fund and its work in Bosnia in particular. During the six-week period of Lent leading up to Easter, people are asked to give up one meal per week and put the money saved in special envelopes available from the churches. Funds will go towards helping multiethnic volunteer teams of women establish a meals-on-wheels service for the elderly, set up healthcare centres and provide training and education for women, many of whom have lost husbands during conflict in the country.
In addition, on Sun 9 April St Andrews Presbyterian Church will hold a nine-kilometre sponsored walk along Via Appia Antica near the tomb of Cecilia Metella, starting at 14.30, also in aid of the European Womens Solidarity Fund in Bosnia. The starting point is the 660 bus terminus in Largo Colli Albani, and the walk will end at the residence of Don Smith, Canadian ambassador to the Holy See, and his wife Betty-Ann, who have agreed to provide refreshments. All are welcome to participate and entry forms are available from the churches or by contacting St Andrews, tel. 064827627.
