Romans return to city after summer holidays.
The weekend of 26 and 27 August saw an estimated 10 million Italians return home from their summer holiday according to the consumer association Telefono Blu. In Rome heavy traffic and long delays were registered on the main roads leading into the capital from the north especially on 27 August. The situation was particularly bad at the Aurelia toll on the A12 motorway from Civitavecchia, the port of arrival for holidaymakers returning from Sardinia. The local airports also came under pressure as Romans flew in from major European cities, the north African or Spanish coasts and the Italian islands: 250,000 passengers passed through Fiumicino and Ciampino on 27 August alone according to airport manager Aeroporti di Roma (AdR). A further six million Italians are expected to return home on the weekend of 3-4 September, while two million are due to set off on holiday on 1 September.
