World’s top tennis players come to Rome.
The 72nd edition of the Rome Master tennis tournament, known officially as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, takes place at the Foro
Italico from 7-17 May and features the world’s greatest tennis stars.
The top-ranking male players taking part in the prestigious sporting event are world number one Novak Djokovic from Serbia, Switzerland’s Roger Federer (although a question remains over his attendance), Britain's Andy Murray, and Spain’s Rafal Nadal who has seven titles under his belt as Rome singles champion.
The top female players include defending champion, America's Serena Williams and her sister Venus, Simona Halep from Romania, Maria Sharapova from Russia, and Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, as well as top Italian player Francesca Schiavone.
The annual tournament is played on clay surface across 14 courts: eight for singles and doubles matches, and the other six for practice sessions.
Initially known as the Italian Open, the event was played in Milan from its inception in 1930 before being moved to its present venue in 1934, and becoming an open event in 1969.
