Rome migrants help the city's homeless

Joel Nafuma Refugee Center helps homeless project.

Migrants, refugees and other volunteers are joining forces to clean up areas used by Rome's homeless, at 10.00 on Wednesday 4 November, as part of the "This Is Our Home" project supported by the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center (JNRC) and city authorities.

Volunteers will clean up the Galleria della Regina Margherita, a litter-filled lane used as a shelter by homeless people, including migrants and refugees. The walkway links Via Napoli and Via delle Quattro Fontane, and is located behind the JNRC at the church of St Paul's within the Walls, on Via Nazionale.

The city's rubbish agency AMA Roma will supply cleaning equipment including gloves, rubbish bags and brushes. All volunteers are welcome and are invited to meet at Galleria della Regina Margherita from 10.00.

The idea for the project came from a guest of the JNRC who was struck by the difficult living conditions of migrants in the capital. Organisers say they want to "create a sense of contribution, respect and belonging to the community while bridging the gap between the lives of refugees and the community of Rome."

Volunteers will also be able to enjoy the refugees’ art work, interactive art activities, music and light refreshments at the JNRC.
