Reports of large reptile swimming in canals around Maccarese area.
Officers from the carabinieri and forestry police are conducting searches of drainage canals around Rome's coastal district of Maccarese after several alleged sightings of a "crocodile" in recent days.
Esterino Montino, the mayor of the local town Fiumicino, confirmed the search was taking place, adding that he hoped it wasn't "the insane gesture of some inconsiderate person who has disposed of a reptile kept at home."
The search has led to widespread irony on social media and even the creation of the "Pizzadrillo" - a zucchine-covered pizza in the shape of a crocodile - at a restaurant in nearby Fregene.
