Rome security plan for football matches

Take-away drinks banned in Rome centre in days around football games.

Rome police chiefs have announced a security plan ahead of the Champions League match between AS Roma and Portuguese side Porto, scheduled at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 on 12 February.

There are 50,000 spectators expected at the game, including 4,000 Porto fans with specific collection points established for the visiting supporters.

Coaches will transport Porto fans to the stadium from Piazzale delle Canestre in Villa Borghese from 17.00, and later from the stadium to Termini station. Porto fans may reach the northern side of the stadium exclusively via Ponte Milvio.

The take-away sale of alcohol has been banned from 19.00 on 11 February until 07.00 on 15 February in the area between Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo and Piazzale delle Canestre.

The ban on drinks in bottles and glass containers was extended until 15 February to include another upcoming game at the Stadio Olimpico, the Europa League match between Lazio and Seville on 14 February.

There is also a booze ban in the area around the stadium, from three hours before the games to two hours afterwards.
